　　Standing in stark contrast with the humid Rio sand and sea is a digital display of ice and snow. The newcomer is an open house for the next Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Anyone walking by is welcome to poke around and chill out.

　　与潮湿的里约热内卢沙滩大海形成鲜明对比的是，映着冰与雪世界的一座竖起的巨大数字屏幕。这个新来的大家伙原来是为了日后韩国平昌冬奥会开放参观日的宣传工作。所有路过的人都欢迎你来里面玩玩转转哟！

　　Honestly, the place felt more like a giant advertisement for Samsung and Korea Telecom than for PyeongChang 2018. But I guess the display does show South Korea’s technological advantage.

　　我偷偷地想这哪儿是宣传2018平昌冬奥，明明感觉更像一个巨大的三星和韩国电信广告牌嘛！不过这屏幕确实能显示出韩国技术的先进。

　　There are three virtual reality stations with a bunch of people queuing up at each. The VR sets allow them to experience skiing and speed skating from an athlete’s perspective. Two of the sets are four-dimensional, so you’re in a machine that moves your body according to the scene. Pretty cool, right?

　　三个虚拟现实体验站，也就是VR站了，后面排满了人。穿上VR设备后可以模拟一个运动员的视角身临其境地体验滑雪和速滑。其中两套设备是四维的,该设备可以让你的身体根据场景变化而动。高大上吧?

　　Most visitors were Brazilians. While waiting in line, I chatted up Júlia Gutlerner, a student from Rio de Janeiro. She and her friends have never tried VR before and they were excited to give it a go. When it was finally Júlia’s turn at the speed skating booth, she couldn’t stop smiling as she turned to see the virtual world around her. She looked kind of silly, almost like a headless fly, but as long as she has fun, it’s all good. She’s also a headless fly when it comes to the Winter Olympics.

　　大多数游客是巴西人。在排队等候的时候，我和里约热内卢的学生朱莉娅葛特娜交谈起来。她和她的朋友可从来没有尝试过VR，这次有机会体验一下实在是太令人兴奋啦！速滑体验站里终于轮到朱莉娅，在虚拟现实世界里她不断地打量着四周，从头到尾笑个不停，感觉她萌萌哒！即使有时如无头苍蝇般不知所措，但只要她玩开心，还在乎其他干嘛。当然，她对冬奥会的概念一样，一问三不知。

　　“The only thing is Brazilians are usually not aware of the Winter Olympics,” she told me, “Last time I didn’t even know they were happening. Now that I know about this one I might be interested to watch it!”

　　“唯一确定的是巴西人一般都没听过冬季奥运会，”她告诉我，“上次我甚至都不知道冬奥会开过。现在我总算知道啦！我还蛮有兴趣去看呢！”

　　I had no idea. Brazilians are pretty into sports, so I assumed they watched the Winter Olympics too. Guess this PyeongChang house is really something new for the visitors.

　　我真是无语了。巴西人出了名地热衷运动，我理所当然地认为他们会观看冬奥会啊。看来这平昌开放参观活动展示的东西对他们来说还真是新奇得很。

　　A lot of them also brought their kids along. In my next line, I talked to another group from Rio. I mean, what else did you expect a young journalist waiting in line to do? Especially in Brazil, where everyone is so friendly and willing to chat.

　　很多人也带了他们的孩子一起。我又和我旁边队伍的里约人交流起来。你觉得像我这样的小记者在这里排队是干嘛呢？特别是在巴西，那里每个人都那么友善那么健谈，这个好机会可得抓住。

　　“There’s not a lot of interest in Brazil for Winter Olympics, because we don’t have snow,” teenaged Marcos Brea said, “I don’t usually watch them.”

　　“很多巴西人对冬奥会没有多大兴趣，主要是我们不下雪，”十几岁的马科斯布雷亚说，“我不经常看。”

　　“I watch!” his sister Luana chirped, “Skiing and skating!”

　　“我看我看！”他的妹妹卢阿纳喳喳地抢过话，“滑雪跟滑冰！”

　　After she got her turn on the skiing VR machine, she kept giggling and gushing about the short ride.

　　在她试玩过滑雪VR设备后，一直傻笑不停，一遍又一遍地夸这个VR体验好。

　　“I love the wind and the movement,” Luana said, “I skied before. I miss the cold.”

　　“我爱风和速度”卢阿纳说，“我以前滑过雪，我怀念那寒冷的味道。”

　　Other than the VR devices, there were also cool signs of South Korean culture for people to experience. Tradition Korean costumes and Korean art? Check. Korean food? Check.

　　Now can someone please explain to me why there are two hand massage machines? When I asked a staff how it’s relevant to South Korea or the Winter Olympics, he shrugged and said they are selling the machines at the house. Maybe these hand massages are as relevant to the PyeongChang Olympics as Winter Olympics are to Brazilians.

　　咦？等等！谁能给我解释下这怎么有两只手部按摩器？我问工作人员这能和韩国和冬奥会扯上什么关系，他无奈地耸耸肩说，这按摩器是在展会上拿来卖的。好囧！也许这些手部按摩器对平昌冬奥的关系就像冬奥会与巴西人的关系吧。

　　The VR sets are not only slick new technology for people to try out, they also bring the sights and sounds of winter sports to a country that’s hot year-round. People who don’t keep up with the Winter Olympics at all get to experience it virtually, often for the first time.

　　整套VR体验设备不仅仅是供人们尝试新科技，它们还将冬季运动的真实景象和音效在一个全年炎热的热带国家中身临其境地还原出来。那些从来没听说过冬奥会的人们终于有机会第一次体验冬季奥运真正的感觉。

　　This is the first Olympic Game held in South America, and it took 120 years. I wonder how long it will be before the first Winter Olympic is set in South America. Maybe this tiny VR house will mark the beginning of a long countdown.

　　今年是在南美洲举行的第一次奥运会，也是120年来的第一次。我不禁想问要多久才会在南美举办第一个冬季奥运会呢？也许今天这小小的VR体验馆将会成为这漫长倒计时的开端。
